The grandmother doll is 18" high

Materials:
Coats & Clark Red Heart Sport Yarn, 2 oz. cranberry, and 1 oz. each of eggshell, camel, black, gray, and blue
Size 3 knitting needles, or size to obtain gauge given below
Polyester fiberfill
Gauge: 13 sts = 2 inches; 9 rows = 1 inch

Directions:
Body and head:
Beg at lower edge with eggshell, cast on 54 sts.
Work even in st st until total length measures 4 1/2 inches; drop eggshell and attach cranberry.
Work even in cranberry until total length measures 9 inches; drop cranberry and attach eggshell.
Work even until total length measures 12 inches. Cast off.
Fold work in half lengthwise and sew back seam; sew lower edge. Stuff firmly, leaving top open.
Draw a strand of eggshell through sts of first row of eggshell; pull slightly to form neck and secure.

Hair section:
Beg at back of neck and with black, cast on 8 sts.
Row 1 (wrong side): K in front and back of first st, k to last st, k in front and back of last st-2 incs made.
Row 2: P in front and back of first st, p to last st, p in front and back of last st.
Rpt Rows 1 and 2 alternately until there are 68 sts on needle.
Work even in st st for 1 inch more. Break off, leaving a 20-inch tail.
Thread this end into a needle and draw through sts on needle.
With another strand of black, sew edges of last 1 inch tog.
With seam at center front and cast-on sts 1/2 inch above neck, pin hair section in place as shown in the photograph on page 73 and sew.
Add more fiberfill as necessary to fill in hair section.
Draw sts on yarn tightly tog and secure.
Wind a 1-inch-diameter black ball for bun; tack in place.
Embroider eyes with black; embroider mouth and cheeks with cranberry.

Leg (make 2):
Beg at upper edge with black, cast on 26 sts.
Work in stockinette stitch for 5 inches, ending with a p row. Now work in pat as follows:
Rows 1-2: P across.
Row 3: K across.
Rows 4-8: P each row.
Row 9: * P 2 tog. Rpt from * across. Break off, leaving a 20-inch tail.
Thread this end into a needle and draw through rem sts.
Draw tog tightly and secure; then sew seam, leaving top open.
Stuff firmly.
Sew top seam tog and sew to body.

Arm (make 2):
Beg at top edge with cranberry, cast on 4 sts.
Working in stockinette stitch, cast on 3 sts at end of next 6 rows-22 sts.
Work even until total length measures 5 inches.
Fasten off cranberry, attach eggshell and continue in st st for 1 1/4 inches more.
Break off, leaving a 20-inch tail.
Thread this end into a needle and draw through sts on needle.
Draw tog tightly and secure; then sew seam, leaving top open.
Stuff firmly.
With cast-on sts on top, sew arm opening to body 1 inch below neck.

Bloomers:
Front:
First leg section: Beg at lower edge with camel, cast on 16 sts. Row 1: K across.
Row 2: P across.
Row 3: Rpt Rows 1 and 2.
Row 5 (first eyelet row): K 1, * k 2 tog, yo. Rpt from * across, ending k 1.
Row 6: P across.
Rows 7-10: Rpt Rows 1 and 2 alternately.
Row 11 (second eyelet row): K 2, (k 2 tog, yo, k 3) twice; k 2 tog, yo, k 2.
Row 12: P across. Work even in st st until total length measures 3 1/2 inches, ending with a p row.
Break off, sl sts onto a holder to be used later.
Make another leg section in the same way; do not break off.
Joining row: K across sts on needle, cast on 4 sts, then k across sts on holder-36 sts.
Work even in st st for 3 inches; cast off.

Back:
Work same as for Front.
Sew side seams and crotch seam.
Fold first 4 rows to wrong side on first eyelet row and sew in place.
Pull on bloomers; add more fiberfill to round out body.
Sew top edge to body.
Thread needle with a 15-inch double strand of eggshell.
Draw through sts of each leg section, 1/4 inch above second eyelet row and tie at side.

Petticoat:
Beg at lower edge with camel, cast on 116 sts. Rows 1-10:
Work as for Rows 1-10 of Leg Section of Bloomers.
Row 11: K 2, * k 2 tog, yo, k 3. Rpt from * to last 4 sts; k 2 tog, yo, k 2.
Beg with a p row, work in st st until total length measures 51/2 inches.
Fasten off, leaving a 20-inch tail.
Thread this end into a needle and draw through sts on needle.
Fold first 4 rows to wrong side on first eyelet row and sew in place.
Pull on petticoat, draw sts on yarn end tog to fit around body and sew in place 1/2 inch above bloomers.

Skirt:
Beg at lower edge with cranberry, cast on 124 sts.
Rows 1-4: Rpt Rows 1-4 of p Leg Section of Bloomers.
Next row: P across for turning ridge.
Beg with a p row, work si even in st st until total length measures 6 inches.
Break off, leaving a 20-inch tail.
Draw yarn end through sts on needle.
Turn first 4 rows to wrong side on turning ridge and sew in place.
Draw sts on yarn end tog to fit waistline and sew in place.

Apron:
Lower part: Beg at lower edge with gray, cast on 46 sts. K 6 rows, then work in pat as follows:
Row 1 (right side): K 4, p to last 4 sts, k 4.
Row 2: K across.
Rpt Rows 1 and 2 alternately until total length measures 5 inches.
Break off, leaving a 20-inch tail; draw ends through sts on needle.
Upper part Beg at lower edge with gray, cast on 20 sts. K 4 rows, then work in pat as follows:
Row 1 (right side): K 3, p to last 3 sts, k 3.
Row 2: K across.
Rpt Rows 1 and 2 alternately until total length measures 2 inches.
Next 4 rows: K across.
Cast off.
Draw sts on yarn end of lower part to width of upper part; secure and sew tog.
For tie, cast on 90 sts; k 6 rows and cast off.
Place center of tie at center of apron on seam; tack in place.

Shawl:
With blue, cast on 3 sts. Row 1: K 2; with yarn in front of needle, sl 1 as to p.
Always sl last st in this way.
Row 2: K 1; k in front and back of next st—inc made; sl 1.
Row 3: K 3, sl 1.
Row 4: K 2, inc in next st, sl 1.
Row 5: K 4, sl 1.
Row 6: K 3, inc in next st, sl 1.
Row 7: K 5, sl 1.
Row 8: K to last 2 sts, inc in next st, sl 1.
Row 9: K to last st, sl 1.
Rpt Rows 8 and 9 alternately until there are 40 sts on needle, ending with Row 8.
Work 3 rows even.
Next row: K to last 3 sts, k 2 tog, sl 1.
Following row: K to last st, sl 1.
Rpt last 2 rows until 3 sts rem. Cast off.
Drape shawl over shoulders, crossing points at front.
Tack each point to waist at side.
Tie apron at back.
Tack each corner of upper apron part to shawl.

Bonnet:
Beg at center back with eggshell cast on 18 sts.
Row 1: K across.
Row 2: P across.
Row 3: Inc one st in each st across-36 sts.
Row 4: P across.
Rows 5-6: Rpt Rows 1 and 2.
Row 7: * K 1, inc on st in next st. Rpt from * across-54 sts.
Row 8: P across.
Rows 9-12: Rpt Rows 1 and 2 alternately.
With a different color yarn, make each end of last row.
Rows 13-18: Work as for Rows 7-12 -81 sts.
Row 19: Inc one st in first st, * k 1, inc one st in next st. Rpt from * across-122 sts.
Beg with a p row, work even in st st until total length measures 3 1/2 inches.
Break off, leaving 20-inch tail.
Draw yarn through sts on needle.

Brim:
With eggshell, cast on 66 sts. Work even in st st for 1 1/4 inches, ending with a p row.
Next row: P across for turning ridge. Beg with a p row, continue in st st for 1 1/4 inches; cast off.
Draw cast-on sts at center back tightly tog and secure.
Sew seam to marker.
Draw sts on yarn end to length of brim and secure.
Fold brim on turning ridge, place gathered end of bonnet bet the two layers of brim and sew in place.

Cord:
Cut two 72-inch strands. Twist these strands tightly in one direction, then fold twisted strands in half and twist in opposite direction.
Cut in half and knot at each end.
Tack one cord to each side of bonnet; tie.
